A Focus…CHATEAU BEAUMONT 2005

Chateau Beaumont is a very large vineyard situated in the Haut Medoc between the village of Margaux and St Julien, It is approx 5km as the crow flies from its more famous stable mate Chateau Beychevelle, both of which are owned, along with the famous Tokaji estate of Hetzolo , by Grands Millesimes de France.

Chateau Beaumont is always a very popular addition to my En Primeur list every year as it offers very good quality v’s price. In recent years I have sold my entire allocation of Beaumont En Primeur and consequently I seldom have it available for retail. When I was offered 20 cases of 2005 that I now have for sale I jumped at the chance

Although there is a big production of Beaumont, (approx. 35,000 cases annually) it is often difficult to come across great vintages, with the appropriate bottle age, ready to drink. The 2005 is a blend of 51% Merlot, 40% Cab Sauv with the final 9% made up from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It is drinking beautifully now and will do so for a further 3-5 years. I believe the 2005 is the finest wine produced at this estate since the 80’s.

Neal Martin, wine writer with Robert Parker offers the following  tasting note, he rated it 90-92/100:

This is an excellent wine. An intense nose of blackberry, cedar and a touch of liquorice. A full-bodied, quite ambitious palate with good acidity. Tight, with blackberry and raspberry fruit. Very focused on the finish. Impressive.
